There has been much hype about the annual release of Putty from @VerdantBrew . It is an awesome 10% NEIPA but it reminds me of another favourite beer of mine which is Big Yin from @Overtonebrewing. It too is a 10% NEIPA.
So, having managed to get some Putty today and also with a case of Big Yin in the fridge I thought it right to do a comparison of the two.
Ingredients
Not much difference here apart from the hops.
Putty | Mosaic, Galaxy, Azacca |
Big Yin | Citra, Citra Cryo, Galaxy, Nelson Sauvin. |
So first of all here is the first pour. Overtone Big Yin.
Then, Putty from Verdant.
So, how do they compare?
Appearance: Nothing in it. Perhaps Putty is very slightly darker.
Aroma:
Putty has a more pronounced aroma but Big Yin is nearly two weeks older. One of the great things about Overtone is that they usually release fresh beer every Tuesday. When I first opened this two weeks ago it was similar to how Putty is today. I’ll be interested to see what Putty tastes like in two weeks time.
Taste:
Putty seems soft and almost sweet. It has a little more body than Big Yin.
Conclusion:
On the day, I preferred Putty but I know Big Yin was better 2 weeks ago. I think this result comes down to freshness. If you live near Verdant or Overtone and have an opportunity to grab these beers then do it!
