Brew Gear

Kettle

The Kettle was made from a 50 litre stainless steel pot. Holes were drilled to fit a bottom drain, heating element, inlet, spray ball and a temperature well. Quick release fittings were added to all the inlets and drain.

Heater

The heating element is rated at 3KW. It is a low density element which means that its surface area is relatively large. This helps to avoid scorching the wort.

Mash Tun

The Mash Tun was made from a 50 litre stainless steel pot. Holes were drilled to fit a bottom drain, inlet, spray ball and a temperature well. Quick release fittings were added to all the inlets and drain.

A false bottom in inserted to prevent large grains going through the outlet and clogging the pump.

125KW 30 Plate Chiller

The purpose of the plate chiller is to cool the boiling wort down to about 25°C as quickly as possible. Hot wort and cold water are pumped through the chiller simultaneously in opposite directions.

Spray Ball

The spray ball is intended to clean the vessels. Pumping water through the ball cause the ball to turn and spray in all directions. These were fitted to the kettle and mash tun. However, the pressure from the pump was insufficient to adequately clean the tanks. The plumbing though was left in place so that if the pumps are replace on the future, it would be possible to self clean.
